Have you ever found yourself asking God for direction? Where do I go? What do I do? What job do I take? These are all questions I have asked God on my knees, through tears, begging for a clear answer. Over and over I would plead with him to just tell me what to do, but never did I hear a clear small voice directing me. Am I the only one who has experienced this? I doubt it. I think there are so many of us just wandering through our lives hoping we are in the Father’s will. We base our decisions on what feels right and what the world is telling us is right. I will admit I too do this, not because I don’t want to follow God’s will for me, but because I feel I am not able to figure out what that is! I am crippled by the fear that I will make the wrong choice and then miss out on what God has planned for me, but can I spoil the secret for you? God has already called you. He has already given all the instructions you need. Am I saying God does not actively lead us into opportunities or pull our hearts towards certain things? Absolutely not. I am saying that we are commanded to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. And to love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:30-31). You can do this anywhere, doing anything. It does not matter if you are at job A or Job B, it does not matter if you are at school A or school B. Wherever you find yourself at any given moment you can look around you and fulfill the commandments of our Father. Listen and wait to hear guidance from our God, but do not sit and wait forever when he has already affirmed you in what you are to do. Isaiah tells us “and your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying “this is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left" (Isaiah 30:21). No matter which path you take, God will be behind you saying “this is the way”, he will use you no matter what you are doing and no matter where you are, if you let him.To be honest, this truth is not always comforting to me, because I feel like it puts the responsibility on me. I can no longer sit around and wait for God to tell me exactly what to do, I instead have to look around and find the opportunities he has already called me to. So often have I used the excuse of “i’m just waiting to see where he calls me”, when the fact is that he has already called me.
However, there is another side to his truth that we can’t forget either. The Bible tells us that “by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.(Ephesians 2:8-9)” I will never be able to live as Jesus did, perfectly. I will never be able to catch every opportunity that is in my life, but I can sure try to do as much as I can. I encourage us all to bathe our big decisions in prayer, listen, and then act. Go live as if God has already laid out the details for you, because he has. He has put you where you are right now, he knows where you will be tomorrow , and at the root of it, he has called you to show love to his people now.
