Have you ever been to a party or some kind of gathering (soiree, if you will) where maybe you didn’t know many people or maybe you were invited by someone last minute?  And did you think to yourself, “Would anyone really notice if I wasn’t here?”  Maybe you thought, “Does anyone really want me here?”

I have been in that situation, and I can guess that you’ve had that thought before.  Maybe with relationships, friends, your parents, or even for a job.  We all want to stop fighting for attention and be chased.  We all want to feel wanted.

When you think about it, it’s a silly concept.  We are ALL wanted, by a very perfect God.  How crazy that we seek out the want of others for us, when the King of Heaven wants us.  We want likes on Instagram.  We want that girl to want to be our friend.  We want that guy to want to date us.  We want our friends to want to hang out with us - not feel obligated to. We want to be wanted, even when the Creator of the universe wants us.  I imagine in these moments of “wanting to be wanted,” God thinks, “Umm…hellooooo?”

But don’t worry.  God knows who He is.  So, in the pursuit of a relationship with Him, I encourage you to also know who He is.  Getting to know God is just like getting to know anyone else!  You spend time together, talk about your successes and struggles, and chat about life!  It seems so easy, right?

When Solomon was putting together the Proverbs and Psalms, he wrote these books as almost an advice guide. One of my favorites is this:

“Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield.  For our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.  Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.”  Psalm 33:20-22

Not only is the Lord our help and shield, but He is our friend.  He wants a relationship with us.  He wants us, even when we seek out the want of others.  But that’s not even the cool part about this verse.  The last line - let your steadfast love be upon us even as we hope in you.  That “even” doesn’t mean it’ll be easy to hope in the Lord.  It should be; we always want it to be.  But friends…it’s hard to hope in the Lord sometimes.  Even as you hope in Him, pray to see His steadfast love for you.  Unlike the want of others around you, His love for you, His wanting of YOU never goes away.  He will always be there, even when hoping in Him is hard.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel like the Lord is letting me down.  Sometimes I feel forgotten.  Sometimes I feel like I’m speaking into empty space and He is choosing not to hear to me.  It is hard to trust in something that makes you feel forgotten.  I find it hard to trust Him wholly because I feel alone. But then I remember 1 Chronicles 28:20. “Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you.  He will not fail or forsake you.”

It has taken me too long to realize that when I feel “forgotten” or “let down,” He is working. He is putting His plans in motion in some area of my life or some other part of the world that will ripple into my life when He needs it to.  His timing is in place, and He has already told me - I will NOT forget you.

For me, knowing I will always be taken care of, knowing I will always have Him to lean on, knowing that I do not have to do this on my own, and knowing that the Lord wants me?  That makes me want to spend all of my time with Him.

So, I’ll tell you this.
Whatever you, reader, are going through, whatever you’re carrying, whatever is breaking your heart, remember this:

The Lord made you.
He designed you with intention and purpose.
He created you: flawless.
He wants you.

He wants you so much that He looked at your life, and mine. He looked at all of our sin, our regrets, and our mistakes. And guess what He did?

He chose the Cross.
He wants you more than anyone ever could, more than you could ever dream of another human being wanting you, more than you could ever want someone else - so much that He died for you.  He died so that you could live in His eternal life.

I encourage you to desire after Him, friends.  Choose Him and choose His love for you over the things of this world that weigh you down. Choose to spend time with Him each day, get to know who He is, because He has always known you for all that you are. He has known you and wanted you even in your darkest days, through your biggest mistakes, and when you have dirtied yourself with sin.  He wants you, and if that fact alone doesn’t make you want to be in His presence, I don’t know what will.
